A new batch of startups has officially launched the seventh cohort of Birdhouse’s accelerator program. Over the next six months, the young companies will follow a personalized program to grow explosively. By offering the program tailored to the start-ups, Birdhouse goes one step further in its ambition to provide the best scaling up experience.
In order to help start-ups grow even faster and more sustainable, Birdhouse is further tightening its programme, explains CEO Jan-Willem Callebaut. “Every start-up is different, one size fits all does not work. We will work out a personal, tailor-made programme for each start-up we admit. With mentors who know their market inside out, and with relevant workshops and sessions. This way we create high impact with clear deliverables that start-ups can really move forward with.”
“The trajectory at Birdhouse continues to be rock ‘n roll. But it’s not an optional experiment. On day one we determine together with the founders where they want to be with their start-up six months later. All coaches, mentors, and everyone in our community work the entire way toward that goal. We teach start-ups to make choices from the start. Focus is the new gold.”
To make the tightening of the program possible, the conditions for participation have been adjusted, with each participating start-up giving up 3% of its shares. This change is necessary to provide a progressive, tailored program to encourage sustainable growth among start-ups.
Funding of 50.000 euro for each start-up
Another important evolution at the accelerator: from now on all start-ups will be able to call on EUR 50,000 in funding from Belfius Bank. They only have to repay the capital after three years, at an extra beneficial interest rate of 1.1%. Belfius developed the Bullet Loan especially for Birdhouse start-ups.
“That 50,000 euros can really make the difference between success or failure,” says Callebaut. “We’ve noticed in previous cohorts that promising start-ups don’t make it because they don’t have enough money available to accelerate quickly enough to a larger capital round. The €50,000 loan – which they can use to pay for an extra team member for a year, for example – gives them that breathing space.”
These are the selected ones
The 10 start-ups of the seventh cohort will inaugurate the revamped program and new business model over the next six months. The jury selected them from over 550 start-ups.
